Dear Mr. Payton,
You came to us in 2006, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and in the midst of our despair you and the New Orleans Saints lifted the spirits of a tired, devastated city. You put smiles on our faces when there wasn’t much else to smile about. You gave us something to look forward to each week and something to cheer for and feel good about! For these things, we, Saints fans everywhere, will always be eternally grateful!
The time has come now however, for us to put these sentimentalities aside for a bit and for all of us to face one glaringly obvious fact. We will never be a Super Bowl contender as long as Gary Gibbs is defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.
Mr. Gibbs’ passive, unimaginative, reactive, never disguise, rarely blitz scheme simply does not work. Yes, we’ve been beleaguered by injuries this season. But, as you’ve said yourself on numerous occasions, we can not and will not use or accept injuries as an excuse!
Drew Brees and the offense should not be required to score 35+ points a game in order to give us any shot at winning a game. Sadly though, this has become the case.
Please do not squander Drew Brees’ prime by stubbornly refusing to admit that you made a mistake in hiring Gibbs. The time has come for you to show that you are sincerely committed to bringing this city a championship caliber football team. Bring in a new defensive coordinator who’s scheme will allow the defense to be every bit as dynamic and aggressive and your offense is.
It’s up to you Mr. Payton, to do the right thing for not only the fans, but for the players as well. Fire Gary Gibbs and give this team a real chance at winning a championship!
Sincerely,
Saints Fans Everywhere
